Walterboro High School was the preeminent school in the county for white students for most of the
20th century. We’ll take a look at the history of this iconic local school through its yearbooks - The Cedar Chest, The Lair, and The Pawprint (1926 - 1971), painstakingly digitized by the Colleton Genealogy Society. We’ll conclude by looking at how the local school system changed when county schools
desegregated in 1970 and what that change meant for WHS, Colleton High, and other area schools.
This presentation by local historian Elizabeth Laney, founder of the Walterboro, SC – History Notes page on Facebook, will dive into the history of this local educational institution and some of the notable personalities behind it, as well as discuss the need to document and preserve these important local
legacies.
