Calling all Wolverines! Walterboro’s Black Schools & Educators from 1900-1970

  • Colleton Museum & Farmers Market 506 East Washington Street Walterboro, SC, 29488 United States (map)

Before Walterboro’s schools were desegregated in 1970, schools such as Oak Hill, Colleton Training School, and Colleton High School were the centers of learning for thousands of local black students. Educators such as Laura Dorman, P.J. Hammi, Wilhelmena Tracy, Ivenia Brown, Pernese Gerideau and
more were the teachers and administrators who guided the journey of those students and many others.

This presentation by local historian Elizabeth Laney, founder of the Walterboro, SC – History Notes page on Facebook, will dive into the history of these local educational institutions and some of the notable personalities behind them, as well as discuss the need to document and preserve these important local legacies.

Did you attend Colleton Training School or Colleton High School? Do you have any old yearbooks, pictures, report cards, or school newsletters? We’d love for you to share your memories at the program OR by contacting historian Elizabeth Laney at wborohistorynotes@gmail.com.
